European Detergents industry reaches a step further towards sustainable cleaning. A.I.S.E., the International Association for Soaps, Detergents and Maintenance Products, launches its 7th Sustainability Report with significant CO2 savings communicated. Companies who apply for the Charter for Sustainable Cleaning have had independently verified that they take sustainability into account in development and manufacture of their products. They ensure that their products are manufactured in a safe manner, taking care of the environment by more efficient use of chemicals and natural resources (eg water). They also make sure through effective management that the products they produce are safe for their intended use. The objective is to move towards more sustainable production and consumption patterns.

All companies committed to the scheme provide data in order to allow the overall performance of the soaps, detergents, and maintenance product industry in terms of economic, social and environmental aspects to be measured. They also commit to provide better consumer and customer safety information.

Cleanright is a service provided to consumers to help them understand the broad range of cleaning and maintenance products available, the benefits each type of product offers, and how to get the best results from them in a safe and environmentally responsible way.

The website is an initiative of two European industry associations, A.I.S.E. and Cefic.

The provision of appropriate information on how to use products can help guide consumers to get the best performance from products and secure safe use of products.

A.I.S.E. has developed a set of safe use icons in order to improve and further develop clear messages for consumers. These messages have been communicated via on-pack labelling and other communication tools since 2004. They are made freely available by A.I.S.E. to any company placing soaps, detergents or maintenance products on the EU market, provided the use of these icons/messages complies with the A.I.S.E. legal and technical guidelines.

In April 2011, A.I.S.E. updated 2 of the safe use icons and revised the guidelines for on pack use. In October 2012, these guidelines were updated to add 4 new icons that are especially well suited to gel capsules, to secure consistent communication across the industry and safe use of these products.
