Business flags concerns that the proposed revision of the European Works Councils Directive poses significant threat to European companies’ competitiveness.

European Works Councils (EWCs) are information and consultation bodies that ensure that employees in companies with more than 1,000 employees operating in at least two EU or EEA countries are involved in decisions related to transnational issues. The proposed revision to the 2009 European Works Council Directive includes a new requirement for managements to wait until after they have responded to any opinion they receive from their EWCs before they may proceed with decision-making on their proposals.

Consultation Opens to Review of the Critical Skills List and Ineligible Occupations List

The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment is inviting submissions to a public consultation to review the eligibility of occupations on the Critical Skills List and the Ineligible Occupations List for employment permits. With more than 2.6 million people in employment and an unemployment rate of 3.8%, reviewing the critical skills permit scheme is important for ensuring that Ireland has the necessary skills available in sufficient numbers for the proper functioning of the economy.

Minister confirms that right of employees to seek paid Domestic Violence Leave will apply from 27 November

Speaking at the Green party annual convention in Cork city earlier this month, Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth RoderIck O'Gorman is reported to have confirmed that the right of employees to seek paid Domestic Violence Leave will apply from 27 November of this year. On that date, Ireland will become one of the first countries in the EU to introduce this measure.
