July 27, 2023

Minister for Justice Helen McEntee has proposed a new Bill to update existing laws dealing with hate speech and to legislate against crime for the first time in Irish law. The Bill aims to criminalise any intentional or reckless communication or behaviour that is likely to incite violence against a person or persons because they are associated with a protected characteristic. The Bill proposes imprisonment of five years for individuals convicted of such an offence.
