Your Action Plan for National Workplace Wellbeing Day 2026

Fostering belonging: your action plan for National Workplace Wellbeing Day 2026

On Wednesday, 29 April, businesses across Ireland will mark a significant milestone: Ibec's 12th National Workplace Wellbeing Day. Over the past years, this initiative has grown from a novel concept as Europe’s only day dedicated to workplace wellbeing, into a cornerstone of the Irish corporate calendar. National Workplace Wellbeing Day provides the perfect platform to celebrate your people and bring your culture to life through shared experiences, but it is ultimately a spotlight on the year-round strategies that support your team every single day.  Ensure your organisation is part of this national movement - put your company on the map by registering your participation today at www.wellbeingday.ie.

The 2026 theme: Belonging

This year's focus feels more relevant than ever as we rally around the 2026 theme: Belonging. In an increasingly diverse and intergenerational world of work, true wellbeing happens when every employee feels genuinely connected to their colleagues and their organisation. As Dr. Kara McGann, Ibec Head of Skills & Social Policy, notes: 'Belonging is more than a cultural metric; it is the heartbeat of a thriving workplace and the foundation of true wellbeing.'

Moving from vision to practical action

For HR professionals and people managers, the challenge is often finding the time and resources to translate this high-level vision into practical reality. However, you don't need a massive budget or months of planning to make a meaningful impact. We have brought together some simple and effective ideas to help you achieve these goals this April: celebrate belonging and spotlight your year-round supports.

Goal 1: Celebrate belonging (on any budget)

When busy workloads and hybrid schedules blur the lines of connection, creating environments where employees feel fully embraced and supported makes all the difference. Here are simple ways to foster community:

  • Organise a 5K walk & talk: Encourage staff to participate in a walk to promote physical activity and build connection with colleagues; it costs nothing and gets people away from their screens.
  • Launch a weekly team coffee break: This is an easy and effective way to boost morale, improve communication, spark creativity, and strengthen relationships. Use National Workplace Wellbeing Day to kick off this new weekly routine.
  • Leverage the team’s skillset, as we all have unique skills and passion points outside of the workplace that could be shared. If a colleague plays guitar or is a yogi in their spare time, empowering them to lead a quick 15-minute session is a free, authentic way to celebrate the whole person.
  • Create a gratitude wall, either virtual or physical, as a space where employees can share messages of appreciation for their colleagues, fostering a positive and supportive work environment; all you need are sticky notes or a dedicated digital channel.

Goal 2: Spotlight your year-round supports

While the energy of the day comes from celebrating your people, it should ultimately serve as a launchpad to highlight the resources that support your team every single day.

  • Organise a wellbeing showcase by holding an in-person, online, or hybrid event to remind your teams of the resources and supports available to them.
  • Demystify the EAP. The Employee Assistance Programme is one of your most valuable tools, but it is often underutilised; send a dedicated communication explaining exactly what the EAP covers, how to access it confidentially, and who it is designed for.
  • Highlight core HR policies by reminding employees of the structural supports you have in place to foster work-life balance, whether that includes flexible working arrangements, parental leave, or mental health days.
  • Launch a wellbeing calendar to show that belonging is a year-round commitment. Tap into upcoming cultural and wellbeing milestones for your organisation will celebrate and support, such as Pride, Mental Health Awareness Week, and International Women’s Day.
