When you hear the ads on the radio for Brennan’s Bread, it’s the voice of Old Mr. Brennan, and you might think it’s just an actor. However, there actually is an Old Mr. Brennan! It was over 50 years ago that Joseph Brennan, Old Mr Brennan himself (though very young at heart!), baked loaves of Brennans Bread in a one room bakery in Fumbally Lane, Dublin. Since then, the bakery has moved to out the road to Walkinstown and is now one of the largest bakeries in Ireland. Brennans is very much a family affair, with the Brennan family still overseeing the recipes and baking skills that Joseph Brennan perfected.
The bakery’s brand promise is ‘Today’s Bread Today’ and that means the bread you see on the shop shelf every day will have left the bakery early that same morning. The delivery vans and trucks are on the road from about 3am, delivering fresh bread every day to shops and supermarkets all across the country, just in time for your breakfast!
The sliced pan is a staple part of the Irish diet, and you might remember all the viral posts on social media about Brennans Family Pan when it became one of the most sought-after necessities during the red weather warning event caused by the ‘Beast from the east’ in 2018.
The business is also very committed to sustainable production and reducing its carbon footprint. To achieve this, Brennans Bakery is involved in a number of sustainability initiatives including:
- Brennans Bread is proud to be a member of Bord Bia’s Origin Green, which is the world’s first sustainability programme for a country’s entire food and drink industry. It enables Brennans to make measurable sustainability commitments which allow the bakery to reduce its environmental impact and serve local communities more effectively.
- The wax paper packaging on Brennans Family Pan white sliced pan and other breads, is 100% recyclable and industrial compostable The soft plastic on some loaves is also 100% recyclable now too!
- Biodiversity is an important issue and Brennan’s are proud supporters of the .
While the Family Pan is undoubtedly the most popular of all their loves, Old Mr. Brennan is still innovating and developing new recipes all the time – the new Bakehouse range has something for everyone!
