BENG POLYMER PROCESS ENGINEERING – NFQ7

This two-year-long part-time programme offers a level 7 BEng in Polymer Process Engineering and is jointly delivered (primarily online) by First Polymer Training Skillnet and ATU Sligo. The course aims to form a well-rounded professional, read to apply their skills in the areas of Polymer Manufacturing, Tooling Design, Automation, Research & Development and Quality Assurance.

BEng in Polymer Process Engineering goes further in plastics, from manufacturing to design. The programme attends to continued engineering training thorough modules Mathematics 3 and Control Systems 301 & 302, design software through module Polymer Tooling Design, quality control though modules Six Sigma 1 & 2, and polymer science through modules Polymer Processing 1 & 2, Fundamentals of Polymer Chemistry, Polymer Characterization & Application, and Plastic Part Design. Furthermore, candidates completing this course meet the requirements of the internationally-recognised Six Sigma Green Belt Award (pending further external examination of the candidate). At last, the module Polymer Project allows the student an individual project execution in the scope of either applied process improvement in partnership with their current industrial employers, tackling the skills need to form a good engineering manager.

Entry Requirements: Applicants should hold a Higher Certificate NFQ Level 6 (Previously called National Cert) or Advanced Craft Certificate in a relevant discipline. Candidates holding other qualifications and/or with relevant experience will also be considered through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process.

BENG (HONS) POLYMER PROCESS ENGINEERING – NFQ8

This two-year-long part-time programme offers a level 8 Beng (Hons) in Polymer Process Engineering and is jointly delivered (primarily online) by First Polymer Training Skillnet and ATU Sligo. The course aims to form a well-rounded professional, read to apply their skills in the areas of Polymer Manufacturing, Tooling Design, Automation, Research & Development and Quality Assurance.

The honours degree in Polymer Process Engineering continues on from the main polymer streams of study identified in the level 7 programme. It focuses on the processes and analysis, design of tooling used in relation to polymers as well as the impact on the environment and the processes for recycling. The programme attends to continued engineering training thorough modules of Statistics and Statistical Process Control, further quality assurance learning though modules of Experimental Design and Quality Management, and advanced polymer science through modules Polymer Rheology, Medical Device Manufacturing, Polymer Recycling, Injection Mould Design, and Advanced Polymer Processing & Analysis. Furthermore, candidates completing this course meet the requirements of the internationally-recognised Six Sigma Black Belt Award (pending further external examination of the candidate). At last, the module Project Thesis allows the student an individual project execution in the scope of either applied process improvement in partnership with their current industrial employers, tackling the skills need to form a good engineering manager.
