Apprentices spend 15 weeks per calendar year at TUS completing their academic block, and the remaining 37 weeks in their host company completing practical, supervised training.

  • Key Skills: Apprentices gain extensive hands-on experience and develop problem-solving skills in core polymer disciplines, including Injection Moulding, Blow Moulding, Extrusion, Thermoforming, and Foam Extrusion. They develop technical competencies in setting up processing lines, troubleshooting, automation, robotics, and 3D printing/additive manufacturing.
  • Curriculum: The curriculum is divided into seven structured phases (four on-the-job and three off-the-job). Key academic modules include Polymer Processing, Materials Science, Engineering Drawing and CAD, Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Automation and Control, and Six Sigma Quality Control.

Entry Requirements

  • School Leavers: A pass (Grade O6/H7 or better) in five Leaving Certificate subjects. Two of these subjects must include Mathematics and a language (English or Irish).
  • QQI (FETAC): Any Level 5 qualification is acceptable, provided the applicant has a Mathematics module (5N1833) included in their award or possesses Leaving Certificate Mathematics.
  • Mature Applicants: Candidates over 23 years old are exempt from Leaving Certificate requirements and are assessed based on their previous education, work experience, and demonstration of competence.
  • Industry Approval: All applicants must successfully pass an industry interview and receive SOLAS apprentice approval.
