Data Protection Commissioner publishes 2022 Annual Report

The Data Protection Commission earlier this month published its annual report for 2022. The publication indicates that the commission applied fines of over €1bn last year as its investigations under GDPR gathered pace. The regulator also processed almost 9,400 new cases from individuals in 2022, 2,710 of which were official complaints.

EU Pay Transparency Directive close to adoption

Key elements of the Directive include requiring employers to provide information about pay levels or range in job adverts or before interview stage. Employers will also be banned from asking applicants about their pay history. In addition, once employment has commenced, employees will be entitled to access information about average pay levels, broken down by gender for employees doing work of equal value.

Employment permits statistics 2023

This month, the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment released statistics on employment permits issued in 2023. The figures show that from the 1st January 2023 – 30th November 2023, 28,383 employment permits were issued, 1,470 employment permits were refused and 583 applications were withdrawn. The statistics do not provide detail on the reasons for refusal or withdrawal.

Consultation Opens to Review of the Critical Skills List and Ineligible Occupations List

The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment is inviting submissions to a public consultation to review the eligibility of occupations on the Critical Skills List and the Ineligible Occupations List for employment permits. With more than 2.6 million people in employment and an unemployment rate of 3.8%, reviewing the critical skills permit scheme is important for ensuring that Ireland has the necessary skills available in sufficient numbers for the proper functioning of the economy.
