Driver loses disability related discrimination case at the WRC

Following the termination of his employment on the grounds of ill health, the employee had lodged a claim with the WRC submitting that his employer's failure to reasonably accommodate his disability by assigning him to permanent day shift work was discrimination.

Rate of parents taking maternity and paternity leave dropped last year - CSO

The proportion of female employees in receipt of state Maternity Benefit in 2022 fell to 5.5%. The sector with the highest rate of employees availing of state maternity benefit was Human Health and Social Work Activities while the lowest rate was in Accommodation and Food Service Activities. The CSO figures also who that since being introduced in 2019, claims for state Parent’s Benefit have seen a dramatic increase.

All public bodies in Ireland have a responsibility, under the Public Sector Equality and Human Rights Duty or the Public Sector Duty, to promote equality, prevent discrimination and protect the human rights of their employees, customers and service users.

Tánaiste confirms introduction of National Living Wage

As agreed by Government, the national living wage will be set at 60 percent of hourly median wages in the line with the recommendations of the Low Pay Commission. It will be introduced over a four-year period and will be in place by 2026, at which point it will replace the National Minimum Wage. In 2023 it is estimated that 60 percent of median earnings would equate to approximately 13.10 per hour.

Age discrimination claims fail in two recent retirement related cases before the WRC

As the workforce continues to age and the retirement landscape evolves, it essential for employers to review and update retirement policies and ensure that they comply with legislation and best practices.
