Introduction of new Employment Permits legislation

Minister for Business, Employment and Retail, Damien English introduced the Employment Permits Bill 2022 to Dáil Éireann earlier this month. The Bill provides for the introduction of a seasonal employment permit and a revision of the labour market needs test together with a number of other changes designed to make the system more agile.

Latest changes to the employment permits system

Changes made by Statutory Instrument this month mean that certain health sector occupations have now been added to the list of jobs that are now eligible for a Critical Skills Employment Permit.  Other immediate changes include the removal of quota limitation for certain construction roles and a quota extension of 425 Meat Processing Operatives.

Minister signs ERO for workers in the security industry

Earlier this month Neal Richmond, Minister of State for Business, Employment and Retail signed an Employment Regulation Order for the Security Industry. The Order for the new ERO, signed on 25 August, will commence on 4 September 2023 when approximately 16,000 workers will see their minimum rate of pay rise from €11.65 to €12.90 per hour. The order had been intended to commence in August 2022, however a legal challenge by a number of small employers in the security industry had prevented this from happening.
