Retail Ireland, the Ibec group that represents the retail sector, today published new data suggesting Christmas retail spending will be up around 5% on last year, with the average household spending €1,019 more in retail during the month of December compared to other months. We expect to see about €5.6 billion in retail spending in December, €1.1 billion more than the typical spend in other month. The majority of stores are trading ahead of last year.

Although pricing decisions rest with individual retailers, the high level of competition in the Irish market continues to deliver strong value for consumers. Despite an increase in inflationary pressures in some categories over recent months, Irish food inflation trends remains below the EU average. A 2023 report by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) confirmed that the Irish grocery market remains highly competitive. Margins in grocery retail are low and recent price increases are overwhelmingly due to cost increases further up the supply chain.

The Labour Court recommendation for new minimum pay and pension contribution rates for the workers in the construction sector has been accepted by Neale Richmond, Minister of State for Employment Affairs and Retail Business.
New Sectoral Employment Order for workers in the Construction Sector commencing on 18 September 2023
Following an application by the BATU, Connect, OPATSI, SIPTU and UNITE to the Labour Court to review the terms and conditions of workers in the construction sector, the Labour Court submitted its recommendations under Section 16 of the Act to the Minister of State for Employment Affairs and Retail Business.
Neale Richmond, Minister of State for Employment Affairs and Retail Business accepted the Labour Court recommendation, meaning the SEO will commence on the 18 September 2023.
