Award of 3000 for civil servant who used a shed for breastfeeding purposes

A civil servant was recently awarded €3,000 by the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) after claiming that no appropriate breastfeeding facilities were provided to her by her employer upon her return to work following maternity leave. The employee claimed that this along with other issues amounted to discrimination based on her gender under the Employment Equality Act 1998 [ADJ-00016513]

Workplace Relations Miscellaneous Provisions Act 2021 signed into law

The Act was signed into law by the President on Thursday, 22 July. Ibec understands that it will be October before the regulations for the SI are finalised which is expected to inform how hearings are to be held. In the meantime, the WRC will implement the legislation in relation to public hearings and the administration of an oath and have issued guidance on oaths and affirmations.

Government approves drafting of the Work Life Balance Bill

Government this month approved the drafting of the Work Life Balance and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill.  The proposed legislation will give parents and carers of children under twelve the right to request flexible work, introduce five days unpaid leave for medical care reasons and extend paid entitlement to breastfeeding breaks from six months to two years.
