Funding for employers in the Community and Voluntary Sector expected to be released by end of September.

Government Departments have committed to releasing the funding to the relevant employers in the community and voluntary sector by the end of Q3 2025 which will pave the way for a 9.25% pay increase for up to 40,000 workers in the sector backdated to October 2024 with phased increases in 2025 and 2026.

10.25% public sector pay agreement reached following WRC talks

Agreement was reached on 26 January at the Workplace Relations Commission between Government and union representatives on proposals for a new collective pay agreement for the public service. The deal covers 385,000 civil and public sector workers who will receive pay increases of at least 10.25 per cent over two and a half years.

Early Years JLC adopts proposals for workers in the childcare sector

The Early Years Joint Labour Committee (JLC) has now adopted proposals for workers in the childcare sector which are anticipated to be active from 1 September 2022. These proposals followed lengthy negotiations between Ibec’s childcare association, Childhood Services Ireland, and ICTU as represented by SIPTU.

High Court overturns Labour Court decision in Debenhams case

On 7 March, Mr Justice Anthony Barr of the High Court allowed key points of an appeal by Debenhams Retail Ireland (in liquidation) against a 2024 Labour Court decision which found that the company failed to comply with the consultation requirements in collective redundancy situations during the early days of the Covid pandemic.

In light of this, Debenhams Retail Ireland (in liquidation) will be allowed to appeal against last year’s decision by the Labour Court.

This ruling could have implications for nearly 800 similar cases brought forward by former Debenhams employees following the company’s insolvency and closure in 2020.

New fines for protection of tips

Minister of State for Business, Employment and Retail, Neale Richmond, on 29 December announced the introduction of new on the spot fines for businesses found breaching rules surrounding tips as outlined in the Payment of Wages (Amendment) (Tips and Gratuities) Act 2022.
