Low Pay Commission to recommend 12% increase in National Minimum Wage
The findings of the most recent Low Pay Commission report on the National Minimum Wage were shared in the media recently. It has been widely reported the Commission is recommending an increase in the National Minimum Wage in 2024 of 12%. This would be a rise of €1.40 an hour, bringing the rate from €11.30 to €12.70.
New Gender Bursary launched to support employers in hiring more women in apprenticeships
Currently only 6% of the apprentice population in Ireland are women, and this is even lower in areas such as engineering and construction. A new Gender Bursary, which is worth €2,666, is available to employers who employ apprentices as part of a national apprenticeship programme with greater than 80% of a single gender.
New retirement legislation signed into law but implementation subject to Code of Practice
The Employment (Contractual Retirement Ages) Act 2025 was signed into law by the President of Ireland on December 16, 2025.

Employment (Contractual Retirement Ages) Bill passed by both Houses of the Oireachtas and expected to be signed into law soon
The purpose of the Bill, which was passed by both Houses of the Oireachtas this month, is to bridge the gap between traditional contractual retirement ages of 65 years of age and the minimum State pension age of 66 years of age. It is intended to allow but not compel an employee to work until the minimum State pension age of 66 years of age. Once law, a commencement order will be required before the changes introduced by the Bill will become effective.
