Right to Request Remote Working moves a step closer
The draft Scheme of the Right to Request Remote Working Bill 2022 was published on 25 January. Ibec has welcomed the broad and non-exhaustive list of considerations under which employers can consider requests for remote working. Concern was raised however at the proposal that a formal remote working policy will be mandatory in all firms regardless of sector or size.

Latest electrical contracting and security industry developments
Last month saw a new High Court challenge brought against a Sectoral Employment Order (SEO) for thousands of electricians working for electrical contracting firms. This month, the Labour Court determined that the proposals for the Security Industry were properly before it and it will now proceed to a substantive hearing on the Employment Regulation Order.
ESRI Study flags low number of employment inspectors
A recently published Economic and Social Research Institute report on non-EU nationals in irregular employment in Ireland indicated that the food service activity sector accounted for 54 per cent of employment permit legislation breaches in 2023, with 12 per cent in hair and beauty, and 11 per cent in wholesale. The ESRI also raised concerns about the low number of work permit inspectors.
