Data Protection Commissioner publishes 2024 Annual Report

On 19 June 2025, the Data Protection Commission (DPC) published its 2024 Annual Report. The DPC is the national independent authority who are responsible for protecting the rights of individuals in the EU to have their personal data protected. The DPC supervises the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and they also have functions and powers related to other important regulatory framework including the Irish ePrivacy Regulations (2011) and the Law Enforcement Directive.

When Duty Calls – what are an employers’ obligations in relation employees who are members of the Reserve Defence Forces?

An army reservist in the Republic of Ireland is a part-time member of the Reserve Defence Force (RDF), which includes the Army Reserve, Naval Service Reserve, and First Line Reserve. The Work Life Balance Directive was due to be transposed into Irish law by 2 August 2022. While this deadline was missed, the Work Life Balance and Miscellaneous Provisions Act 2023 was signed into law by Michael D Higgins, President of Ireland, on 4 April 2023.

Government agrees Covid recognition payment and new public holiday

Government has agreed to designate a once-off public holiday on Friday 18 March 2022 in recognition of the efforts of the general public, volunteers and all workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. A tax free recognition payment of €1,000, for eligible health and ambulance workers has also been confirmed.

Employer who included statutory sick leave when disciplining worker for absenteeism found in breach

The employee, a customer service advisor had a number of unplanned absences from work for his own illness and family illness in 2023. Due to a high level of absence, he was disciplined with a verbal warning on the 25 of September 2023. In his claim he said that he became very sick with flu like symptoms while at work on the 12 October 2023. He was absent for 1.5 days and submitted a medical cert and availed of Sick Pay as per the Sick Leave Act 2022. The claimant submitted that subsequent to this the respondent disciplined him with a written warning.
