Government rejects 'Right to Remote Work' Bill, citing WRC overreach concerns and other factors

February 26, 2026

The Labour Party’s Work Life Balance (Right to Remote Work) Bill 2026 was defeated in the Dail on 19 February 19 following a second stage vote.

The proposed Bill aimed to move beyond a mere right to request remote work, instead offering an enforceable right to work remotely where roles allowed.

The Government, however, opposed the Bill, citing the need for balanced legislation, the avoidance of inappropriate interference with business operations, and the ongoing review of the current 2023 Work Life Balance Act.
