Invention is less ‘blue-sky’ thinking and more a gradual and iterative
process that complements and supports continuous process improvement.
Both innovation and invention depend on design thinking (starts with an open question) which is different to
engineering thinking (begins with a problem statement). Engineers need to learn how to switch gears
between both.
This course nurtures a design mindset by mentoring engineers and technicians as
they adjust their thinking for additional or different
constraints and possibility as presented by additive manufacturing .
On completion of this course, participants will be able to develop a design
idea from initial concept to production. They will have the competency to
approach problems from different angles, 3D design model and select most
suitable materials for parts and prototype production.

- Selection of work-integrated projects
- Expert 1-to-1 coaching on-demand (evenings 4-6 pm)
- Creation of a 3D printed prototype portfolio (using Inventor or Solid works)
- Support from a state-of-the-art Learning Management System through-out
Course timeline:
Video content is largely self-paced with 5 online group tutorials and 4-6 expert-mentored 1-to-1 sessions.
The culmination is a Demonstration Day in Athlone where their 3D-printed parts and prototype portfolio is viewed and learning shared by the cohort.
This course is CPD points recognised by Engineers Ireland.
