Combatting digital piracy among Audiovisual Ireland’s top priorities

Audiovisual Ireland, the Ibec representative group for the screen industry has called for the next government to prioritise combatting digital piracy, promoting Irish language content, and continuing to increase Screen Ireland funding.

Possibility of stronger rights for European Works Councils

The EU Commission launched a consultation process with interested stakeholders this year with a view to making changes to the European Works Council (EWC) Directive. The consultation process ended in May, and the Commission has committed to following up the consultation with a legislative proposal. If we are to see changes to the existing Directive at some point, this would have a knock-on impact for the Irish legislation also.

High Court rules that Labour Court decision on Sunday premium was error in law

The Labour Court had upheld a decision of a Rights Commissioner and said a hotel had failed to tender any evidence in relation to what element of the hourly rate of pay was referable to the obligation to work on Sundays.

 

The High Court earlier this month (October 7th) ruled that the Labour Court made an error of law in a 2017 decision on Sunday premium payments for two hotel workers.

Mandatory sick pay imminent?

The Sick Leave and Parental Leave (Covid-19) Bill 2020 is currently being debated before Second Stage of the Dáil, having been introduced by the Labour Party on 17 September 2020. The Bill proposes to not only obligate employers to pay 6 weeks of sick leave but to extend the provisions of force majeure leave far beyond its statutory remit.

New postponement procedures published by the WRC

The Workplace Relations Commission has issued new postponement guidelines to update and replace the previous version and to ensure the process is fair and transparent. The new postponement procedures apply to all new applications from 1 July 2021.
