Irish Cider Market 2024: Driving Global Growth and Innovation

December 16, 2025

The latest data for the Irish cider sector highlights a year of resilience, international success, and continued innovation. Despite challenging domestic market conditions, Irish cider producers have demonstrated their ability to adapt and thrive on the global stage.

Export Growth Amid Domestic Challenges

In 2024, export value for Irish cider rose by 10%, reaching almost €85 million. This strong performance underscores the sector’s global appeal and the commitment of producers to expanding international markets.

Conversely, domestic sales declined by 4%, impacted by a difficult trading environment and a poor summer. High excise duties remain a significant barrier, with Ireland currently holding the fourth highest cider excise rate in the EU.

Innovation Driving Consumer Choice

One of the most notable trends in 2024 was the surge in the non-alcoholic cider category, which grew by nearly 14%. This growth reflects evolving consumer preferences and the sector’s ability to innovate, offering new choices that meet changing demands.

A Call for Fair Competition

While Irish cider producers deliver strong results internationally, they face challenges at home. With almost 27% of the price of a pint going to tax, the current excise regime places Irish producers at a competitive disadvantage. Aligning excise rates with European averages would unlock significant potential for rural economic growth and strengthen Ireland’s position as one of the leading cider markets.
