The Workplace Recycling Gap

September 02, 2025

Repak Calls on Ibec Members to Lead the Way.

At Repak, we’re dedicated to helping Irish businesses ensure they are fully compliant with commercial recycling regulations and are implementing a 3 bin system in the workplace. Your commitment is vital in driving Ireland towards its national sustainability goals.

Addressing the Workplace Recycling Gap

Research, conducted by Repak, reveals a concerning gap in workplace recycling practices. Many employees are either unaware of their company’s recycling policies or believe their workplaces are not meeting legal requirements. This presents a significant opportunity for businesses to enhance their waste management processes and align with Ireland’s ambitious environmental targets.

Legal Obligations and the Three-Bin System: A Reminder

Under regulations introduced in July 2023, Irish businesses have legal obligations regarding the segregation of packaging waste. This necessitates the implementation of a three-bin system, aligning with Regulation 5 of the European Union (Packaging) Regulations 2014 (as amended).

Businesses must:

  • Segregate waste by material type.
  • Ensure packaging waste is clean, dry, and recyclable.
  • Arrange for proper collection of waste for recycling.

Why Action is Critical Now

Despite an increase in commercial recycling subsidies in 2024, Ireland experienced a decline in recycled material tonnage compared to 2023. This trend underscores the urgent need for businesses to implement sustainable changes.

“Repak is calling on Ibec members to take a leading role in implementing the three-bin system and ensuring compliance,” says Zoe Kavanagh, CEO of Repak. “It’s not just about meeting legal requirements; it’s about actively contributing to Ireland’s efforts to achieve EU recycling targets and transition to a circular economy.”

Repak's Commitment to Continuous Support and Sustainable Practices

Repak is committed to supporting businesses in their sustainability efforts. We urge Ibec members to take the following proactive steps:

Meeting Ireland’s 2025 Recycling Targets: A Collective Effort

Ireland’s 2025 recycling targets, requiring 55% of plastic packaging waste and 60% of all packaging waste to be recycled, necessitate collective effort. Businesses are crucial in achieving these goals.
