Overview

This is a briefing for members who work in the wider tourism, events, entertainment, leisure, visitor attractions, hospitality and food services sectors.

In recent times, there have been several decisions by the Workplace Relations Commission in which workers in the food services sector have been awarded compensation and back pay for breaches in employment legislation including breaches of the Payment of Wages Act, Organisation of Working Time Act and Employment Permits Acts.

The Workplace Relations Commissions annual report 2024, published in April of this year, reported that out of 77 successful prosecutions for employment breaches in 2024 approximately two thirds involved companies in the food services sector with over 80% of these involving breaches of the Employment Permits Acts.
