What is a health claim?

In our last blog we explained what nutritional analysis is and what is meant by a nutrition claim (high fibre, low fat etc.). You might also have heard about another type of claim on labels - “Health Claims”. A health claim is any statement about a relationship between food and health(1). And what do we mean by a “claim”? It is any message or representation including pictorial, graphic or symbolic representation which states, suggests or implies that a food has particular characteristics(2).

Case law highlights breaches of employment permit and working time rules in food service sector

The Workplace Relations Commissions annual report recently reported that out of 77 successful prosecutions for employment breaches in 2024 approximately two thirds involved companies in the food services sector with over 80% of these involving breaches of the Employment Permits Acts. There have been several recent decisions by the WRC in which workers have been awarded compensation and back pay for breaches in employment legislation including breaches of the Payment of Wages Act, Organisation of Working Time Act and Employment Permits Acts.

It’s also the month that has been renamed “Veganuary” and champions of the plant-based diet try to encourage and convert consumers to try or adopt veganism. One of the challenges this poses is knowing what foods are vegan and which ones are not. Not everyone is in a position to make their food from scratch, and buying ready to eat vegan foods is much easier. There is a really good selection of new plant-based food producers emerging in the marketplace.
