Challenge your employees this Movember

July 31, 2023

Movember is the leading global charity changing the face of men’s health. Our fathers, partners, brothers and friends are facing a health crisis, yet it’s rarely talked about. Movember exists to stop men dying too young by tackling some of the most complex health issues facing men today – mental health, suicide, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

In Ireland, more than 3 out of 4 suicides are men, 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men aged between 15 and 34. We are making changes but we need your support to ensure that the men in our lives live happier, healthier and longer lives.

With local and global support from our Mo community, Movember funds deliver biomedical research, cancer survivorship programmes, innovative community mental health programmes and digital health products that work for men.

In Ireland, examples of some of these innovative programmes are the ‘Irish Prostate Cancer Outcome Registry’ running at 16 hospitals around the country, the ‘Tiger Trial’ at St. James’s Hospital, Dublin, ‘Hugs at Home ‘through the Royal College of Surgeons and ‘Ahead of The Game’ launched with The GAA this year.

Movember knows what works for men, we go to where men are whether it is the sports ground, to hanging out with friends, the pub, gaming or the workplace! In the workplace we create bespoke fundraising and awareness campaigns that empower staff to learn more about our cause areas. The ultimate aim is triggering positive behavioural change when it comes to their health, and they feel confident to reach out to loved ones who might be struggling.

Movember Business Club (MBC)

The Movember Business Club is the name of our annual free health messaging and wellbeing programme, it is designed to bring fun and unity to staff, whilst raising awareness and funds for men’s health.

It has been created to help companies meet their wellbeing and employee engagement objectives. It engages staff of all genders to raise funds and awareness for men’s health. Companies across Ireland compete as teams on our Mo Space platform for the coveted top place of the Movember Business Club leaderboard and of course bragging rights! Last year 350+ workplaces from all different industries were involved such as Ernest and Young, Johnson & Johnson, Kelloggs, CRH, ESB, AIB, Apple and Intel.

How it works

Staff come together to partake in challenges to help fundraise, raise awareness but also improve their own physical and mental health. There are four categories to achieve this:

  • Move (take on a physical challenge for the month)
  • Grow (manicure their best/worst moustache
  • Host (get staff together socially from a lunch and learn, hike, five a side to a pub quiz)
  • Mow Your Own Way (people choose their own challenge -from giving up chocolate to doing a marathon a day!)

The month-long campaign provides networking and team-building opportunities woven through a hairy background of a fun friendly competition for all genders. The set up of teams on the Mo Space can vary, there are options to have just one united team or have multiple teams (adds to the friendly banter) from the same company but under the one company network. It can also include international locations as The MBC is a global programme. Our survey from our 2020 MBC participants showed that 75% felt more positive about their workplace because they supported Movember, 83% felt happier and healthier as a result of taking part and 68% took some time to improve their mental health and wellbeing.

Movember Business Club Benefits

We have a wide range of benefits running from a dedicated account manager, men’s health awareness resources, fundraising resources, digital health tools, charity merch, health talk options to volunteer opportunities.

Workplace Ambassador Training

One of our volunteer opportunities is to become an ambassador for Movember. The training is open to everyone within the workplace from those with a connection to our cause areas or those who are seeking to make your culture feel more connected and open.

The morning training session will train staff on how to run a Movember campaign and will help them gain a deeper insight into our cause areas, impact, and local programmatic work in Ireland and globally. They will connect with a network of passionate corporate Mo’s and gain vital skills for: leadership, fundraising & campaign planning, event management, campaign marketing and health promotion.

We have two training options in person or online:

  • In person training: will be happening in The Fumbally Stables, Dublin, Thursday 31st of August for a morning session 9:30am-12:30pm.
  • Online Workplace Ambassadors training: will be streamed on Zoom from our London HQ, Wednesday 6th of September for a morning session 9:30am-12:30pm.
