CEO Update: Clarity needed on Government decision to restrict Experience Economy

June 29, 2021

Dear member,

This afternoon’s decision to postpone the planned reopening of the Experience Economy is hugely disheartening for thousands of businesses across the country. Businesses in this crucial component of the economy have played their role in laying the foundations for the gradual reopening of society and while there is a recognition of the health motivations behind today’s decision from Government, it remains hugely disappointing that they will now be subjected to further delays during the peak holiday season.

Attention must now swiftly turn to ensuring that business has a voice in the development of a system that can safely and sustainably facilitate the reopening of indoor hospitality as soon as possible. Ibec will continue to voice the concerns of business as it has done throughout this pandemic.

In addition, we are calling on NPHET to publish the data that is underpinning their recommendation to postpone the reopening of Ireland’s Experience Economy. Such transparency would help dissipate some of the confusion that is rife amongst employers and employees as, internationally, countries have managed to keep their businesses in this sector open while at the same time managing the spread of the disease in communities.

As always, get in touch if you have any queries.

Regards,

Danny McCoy
