CEO Update: Latest engagement on reopening of economy

April 22, 2020

The latest CEO Update newsletter to Ibec members from Danny McCoy

Dear member,

As you will be aware current engagement with Government and other stakeholders is focusing on the immediacy of economic reopening and planning for the de-escalation of restrictions on business. I have wrote to An Taoiseach requesting that the Department of Business be put in the lead role of workplace re-opening which was also the kernel of my recent Business Post article.

Also, to keep you briefed on our engagement with Government, a meeting of the Labour Employer Economic Forum (LEEF) took place on Monday. Chaired by Martin Fraser, Secretary General, Department of An Taoiseach, senior cross-departmental officials were also present while Ibec was joined by representatives from ICTU, Chambers Ireland and the CIF.

The key outcomes from the discussion are as follows:

The political engagement strand of LEEF will take place on Friday morning with An Taoiseach and senior members of cabinet.
It was agreed that there was a need for a national protocol on the return to work rather than sector specific initiatives.
Ibec will be working with the HSE and the Health and Safety Authority on these national protocols.

This morning, I along with Patricia King of ICTU began discussions with the Health and Safety Authority and the Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation on the considerations for a safe return to the workplace. This initiative will continue as we endeavour to find a protocol for that safe reboot for our businesses and our employees.

I will provide you with a further update on Friday.

Best wishes,

Danny McCoy
