Agreement reached on Platform Work Directive

On 11 March 2024, EU employment and social affairs ministers confirmed the provisional agreement reached between the European Parliament and the European Council on a new platform work directive. This was a somewhat surprising development, further to the agreement being blocked by a number of states last month. Platform workers are often referred to as "gig workers" and the term refers to those workers who are contracted to work for a digital platform, such as food delivery drivers and rideshare drivers, often as independent contractors.

One hour rest break for retail workers past its sell-by date?

Whether or not an individual is considered a "shop employee" will determine the length of break they are entitled to during the working day. Ibec is currently exploring this legislative requirement with member organisations to establish whether this one hour break is in fact still fit for purpose.

Catherine Toolan appointed Chair of Ibec Experience Economy policy committee

Ibec’s Experience Economy policy committee today announced the appointment of Catherine Toolan, Managing Director of Diageo Irish Brand Homes, as its new Chairperson during a meeting held at Shannon Airport. Irish Brand Homes includes Guinness Storehouse and Open Gate Brewery, Roe and Co and the Smithwick’s Experience in Kilkenny. Catherine takes over the role from Pat McCann, former CEO of Dalata Hotel Group, who stood as Chairperson for two and a half years.

Ibec calls for the retention of the 9% VAT rate indefinitely to support the Experience Economy percent 

Ibec, the group that represents Irish businesses, is calling on the Government to maintain the 9% VAT rate indefinitely for the Experience Economy. This rate, scheduled to conclude on August 31st, has played a vital role in sustaining businesses and preserving a significant number of the more than 300,000 jobs in the experience economy nationwide.
