Food and its relationship with Social Media

If you were to google the definition of the phrase “social media influencer” You would find something like “Social media influencers are digital creators with expertise in a specific niche”. There are thousands of them in the food world alone, including chefs, food writers, food scientists, food producers, growers, registered dieticians, nutritionists, or just anyone with an opinion on food or nutrition. However, self-proclaimed “experts” may not all be all that. The problem is that opinion is not always grounded in fact. So, is social media useful for the food world? And can you believe everything you read / see / hear?

Food reformulation

You may or may not have heard the term “reformulation” when it comes to food. What it means is that the recipe is adjusted or ingredients changed in the food to make it more nutritious, by reducing calories and some specific nutrients.

Around 40% of all deaths in Ireland are attributable to preventable risk factors. Poor diet is the biggest risk factor for chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease and diabetes, surpassing the combined effects of tobacco, alcohol and physical inactivity. To improve our dietary patterns, we need to move away from an excess consumption of ultra processed foods such as takeaway meals to eating more sustainable foods including wholegrains, plant proteins, fruit and vegetables!

Preparing for NIS2

The NIS2 Directive will apply from 18 October 2024 and introduce cybersecurity risk management and reporting requirements for many organisations in Ireland.  

It will apply to the following sectors:  

Energy, transport, banking, financial market infrastructure, health, water (drinking and waste), digital infrastructure, ICT service management (B2B), public administration, space, postal and courier services, waste management, chemicals (manufacture, production and distribution), food (production, processing and distribution), manufacturing, digital providers, and research.  

To learn more about the law and what organisations can do to prepare, we will be joined by a panel of guests from the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and CWSI to provide perspectives from the policy, regulatory and provider points of view.
