United States

The United States is the largest market for Irish whiskey. Since 2018, the EU and UK have been engaged in a number of trade disputes with the US which have resulted in the imposition of tariffs on a range of spirits categories. Thankfully, over 99.9% of Irish whiskey were excluded from these tariffs.

Regrettably, Northern Irish single malts were subject to a 25% tariff, but this is currently suspended until 4 July 2021. Drinks Ireland|Irish Whiskey has actively lobbied on this matter in Brussels, London and Washington; and we continue to support industry-wide lobbying calling for a permanent resolution to transatlantic trade disputes.
