New Retirement Legislation: Commencement Confirmed for 29th of June 2026

June 17, 2026

On the 16th of December 2025, the Employment (Contractual Retirement Ages) Act 2025 was signed into law. However, this piece of legislation required a commencement order from the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment to officially go into effect.

The government indicated that it will not commence until the WRC’s Code of Practice on Longer Working (S.I.600/2017) is revised. The revised Code of Practice was recently approved by Alan Dillon, the Minister for Employment, Small Business and Retail, and both the Code and the Act will take effect on the 29th of June 2026.
