Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation reaches implementation stage

April 15, 2025

The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) places several requirements on our industry. Over the last two years, trade associations within Ibec have engaged extensively with European stakeholders, including MEPs and the Commission, to shape the development of the PPWR. We now move to the next stage of the engagement process, with the Department of Environment, to shape implementation.

A guide to many of the upcoming clarifying instruments can be found here, with an AIM briefing document here.

Ibec and SFA members are requested to read these documents and share any PPWR-related feedback with us, using the following headings:

  • Packaging minimisation
  • Excessive packaging & empty space requirements
  • Packaging labelling requirements
  • Environmental claims on packaging
  • Packaging recyclability
  • Recycled content for plastic packaging
  • Reuse targets
  • Restrictions on certain packaging formats
  • Prohibition of misuse of information by distributors

This will then be collated and shared with the Department, with further engagement expected thereafter. If you have any questions please reach out to Jonathan McDade at jonathan.mcdade@sfa.ie

Members are requested to provide feedback by COB 18 April 2025, at the latest.
