AI could save 400,000 lives yearly – Irish Medtech Association

December 07, 2023

The Irish Medtech Association, the Ibec group that represents the medtech sector, Enterprise Ireland and IDA Ireland today are co-hosting the must-attend event for medtech leaders, ‘Medtech Rising: The Business Leaders’ Conference and Awards’, in The Galmont, Galway. This year’s event will explore: worldclass innovation, global economic outlook, sustainability, fostering talent, generative AI, the future of EU regulations, and more.

Dr Eoghan Ó Faoláin, Irish Medtech Association, Director, said, “Medtech Rising marks an important milestone on the medtech calendar as the industry reflects on the months gone by and reimagines what the future might hold. Technological advancements like AI are not only capturing the imagination, they’re transforming how we work, how healthcare is delivered, and how we live. Research by our counterparts, Medtech Europe, revealed that AI could potentially save 400,000 lives annually, with examples of its role in healthcare such as robots supporting an estimated 30% of clinical nurse tasks that do not involved direct patient interaction and facilitating clinical radiology workflow by image acquisition. At the Business Leaders’ Conference we’ll look at the opportunities and implication of AI for the Irish medtech industry, as well as explore other key game changers driving innovation today, and shaping the future of healthcare tomorrow.”

Garrett Murray, Enterprise Ireland, Head of Lifesciences, said, “Enterprise Ireland is proud to co-hosts Medtech Rising with Ibec’s Irish Medtech Association and IDA Ireland to bring medtech leaders together to explore new ways of delivering its vision to transform lives and network. Ireland medtech industry has scaled significantly in recent year achieving new heights with our indigenous industry, which represents over 60% of businesses in the sector, delivering disruptive technologies, scaling employment and enhancing patient outcomes. Our highly collaborative ecosystem also helps us stand out internationally, and events like this help forge important connections between the business community, clinicians, and researchers, along with other experts.”

John Nugent IDA Ireland Manager Medical Technologies Department, said, “Ireland’s economy is powered by dynamic sectors like medical technologies. Medtech Rising is an unmissable event as a global business leader’s conference that reflects the sectors multidisciplinary nature and commitment to continuously evolving. Over the course of the day the Business Leaders’ Conference will see senior executives from FDI multinationals, join entrepreneurs, and clinicians, to share the stage to talk about key trends like digitalisation, and sustainability. In a rapidly transforming world it’s vital that we build on our reputation as a leading location for medtech to ensure our competitiveness.”
