Launch of "Responding to Suicide - A Guide for Employers"
Ibec is delighted to have worked with the Irish Hospice Foundation on the development on "Grief in the Workplace: Responding to Suicide – A Guide for Employers", which was formally launched today. Ibec was one of several stakeholder groups, including the HSE National Office of Suicide Prevention, and ICTU, to support the development of this important guide.
Ibec Director of Employer Relations, Maeve McElwee said: “The development of this guide is a welcome resource for employers. In a workplace context, employers can be overwhelmed on how to appropriately and effectively respond to the impact that a death by suicide can have in a workplace.
“This guide sensitively and practically takes an employer through all of the steps and issues they need to consider, addressing the immediate issues that require attention as well as the longer-term considerations. The inclusion of case studies of peoples lived experiences are a really effective way of demonstrating how we can all learn to approach suicide in the workplace in a better way and support one another.”
The guide is set out in a user-friendly manner and provides links and contacts for the many external support bodies that employers and employees can engage with as required through the natural stages of the bereavement process.
Suicide, and its impact in the workplace is a reality for families, for employers and for work colleagues. This new Guide is an essential support for employers when responding to suicide.
