Q2 planning permissions data points to impact of Covid lockdown on future housing supply
Property Industry Ireland (PII), the Ibec group for businesses working in the property sector, said today’s data show that uncertainty around Covid is continuing to have an impact on the pipeline for new houses.
PII Director, Dr. David Duffy stated: "Looking at planning permissions as a lead indicator of future supply the data for the first half of 2021 suggests that the gap between supply and demand will remain for the short term, at least.
“Housing for All includes targets for private sector delivery of new homes. A 42% decline in permissions for multi-development housing units in the first half of the year means that there is an urgent need to implement the Housing for All measures aimed at increasing supply. The new planning process for large scale residential developments must be prioritised to avoid delays in the supply of much needed new homes.”
