BioPharmaChem Ireland (BPCI), the body the represents biopharmaceutical manufacturing within Ibec, has welcomed the announcement by Pfizer that it plans to invest $40 million at its Grangecastle Facility in West Dublin to manufacture a key component of the mRNA Pfizer-BioNtech COVID -19 vaccine. The investment, which will create an additional 75 jobs, will allow the plant to manufacture the mRNA drug substance, a key part of the final vaccine that patients are receiving.

BPCI Director, Matt Moran said: “This is great news for the Pfizer Grangecastle operation and indeed for the entire Irish biopharma industry as it exemplifies the capability that has been developed here in the country. BPCI is immensely proud of this achievement and the continued and ongoing role that Pfizer and the biopharmaceutical industry plays in helping to end the pandemic.”

The biopharma sector continues to play a critical role in supporting the Irish economy before and during the pandemic. Last year it exported over €96 billion worth of product – over 60% of all goods exported from this country.
