Ibec, the group that represents Irish business, has welcomed the designation of the Munster Technological University (MTU).

Ibec Senior Regional Policy Executive Helen Leahy stated: “Business fully supports the establishment of a technological university in the region. A technological university that is agile, responsive, engaged with the business community and, most of all, delivering high quality teaching and research will present significant opportunity for the region. A thriving business community is directly linked to a strong education and research infrastructure.

“The Institutes of Technology are important drivers of development. Businesses in the region have a long history of collaboration with Institute of Technology Tralee and Cork Institute of Technology. A technological university offers considerable scope to enhance how businesses and the institutions can work together on a range of issues to support the needs of business and attract investment and high-value employment to the region.

Ms Leahy said: “It is vital that Government maintains its commitment to the €90million TU Transformation Fund, to ensure technological universities become embedded in the education system to support economic and social growth. The MTU will require significant public investment if it is to reach the scale needed to attract top academic talent, compete in the challenging international research environment and drive regional development.”
