Bill Doherty elected as Irish Medtech Association representative on MedTech Europe Board
The Irish Medtech Association, the Ibec group that represents the medtech sector, today announced Bill Doherty of Cook Medical has been elected to the board of MedTech Europe. MedTech Europe is the European trade association for the medtech industry which encourages policies to help this innovative sector meet Europe’s growing healthcare needs and expectations.
Irish Medtech Association Director Sinead Keogh said: “Ireland is a gateway for the world’s second largest medtech market, Europe, worth €115 billion with 675,000 people employed across 27,000 medtech companies. We are undergoing a period of great change in the industry and it’s vital to the success of Ireland’s global medtech hub that our voice is heard on key EU policies. Our immediate concern is ensuring the care continuum for patients with the EU Medical Devices Regulation deadline fast approaching in May 2020. Regulatory system readiness must be a priority for the EU to avoid re-certification bottlenecks, and ensure clinicians and patients have access to life saving medical devices.
“Bill Doherty is uniquely positioned to represent Ireland’s dynamic medtech hub as a former Chair of the Irish Medtech Association who brings more than 25 years’ international business experience to the MedTech Europe. Bill has been at the forefront of industry needs, helping people understand the value of medtech in transforming lives as the Chair of the Irish Medtech Association PR Taskforce, supporting innovation and transparency through clinical-industry relationships as the Chair of the Irish Medtech Association’s Ethics Committee, and as a leader in business preparedness under the new EU MDR. We know Bill will be a fantastic advocate for both Ireland’s and Europe’s medtech industries.”
Irish Medtech Association board member and Cook Medical VP EMEA, Bill Doherty, said: “As a long-serving board member of the Irish Medtech Association, I’m delighted to be given this opportunity to represent the Irish medtech industry in Europe. Ireland has emerged as a global medtech hub, in order to ensure that we continue to deliver life-changing solutions for patients we must explore new ways to support innovation and the growth of this dynamic industry. The Irish Medtech Association has been a key catalyst in fostering a vibrant medtech environment in Ireland and we want to build on this success to foster greater collaboration in Europe. Participation in international groups like MedTech Europe helps business gain new insights, share best practice and better address pressing policy priorities.”
