Food Drink Ireland welcomes publication of National Childrens Food Survey II
Commenting on the publication of the National Children’s Food Survey II, Linda Stuart-Trainor, Director of Prepared Consumer Food in Food Drink Ireland (FDI), stated: “The food industry welcomes the publication of the latest national survey on children’s diets and physical activity. Having up-to-date data is vital for all stakeholders and for the development of evidence-based policy.
“The survey shows significant reductions in obesity levels among Irish children since 2003-2004, as well as reductions in intakes of sugar and salt and increased intakes of dietary fibre. During this period, the food industry has made significant progress in food reformulation, new product development and agreeing a code of practice for advertising and marketing.
“The survey also highlights a number of areas for improvement. There is no silver bullet for reducing obesity and improving dietary habits. The food and drink industry will continue to play it’s part alongside policy-makers, educators and consumers themselves.”
