Business has big role to play in combating climate change

June 17, 2019

Ibec, the group that represents Irish business, today welcomed the publication of the Government’s new Climate Action Plan. The new strategy is a bold statement of intent and represents a significant increase in Irish climate ambition. While some of the measures need to be further developed, the action plan provides a mechanism to introduce policies required to deliver a low carbon transition.

Ibec CEO Danny McCoy said: “Climate change is the single biggest threat facing humankind today. We must do everything in our power to deliver a competitive low carbon economy. Irish business is already leading the way. Last month Ibec launched its own low carbon roadmap setting out a vision for 2050 that would see Ireland have a smart, low carbon economy known for its sustainable enterprise base, industrial competitiveness, energy resilience, skilled workforce and high quality of life. It is positive to see Government adopt many of Ibec’s policy recommendations. We now look forward to working with Government, policymakers and other relevant stakeholders on the implementation of the new strategy.

“For Irish business, the low carbon transition presents a no-regrets opportunity to build a better Ireland. If we focus on smart, cost-effective and evidence-based policies, we can use the transition to enhance our energy security, boost competitiveness, improve quality of life and create thousands of sustainable jobs across the country.”
