Ibec, the group that represents Irish business, welcomed today’s announcement from Government on the National Broadband Plan (NBP), citing the delivery of high-speed broadband as vital for the development of Ireland’s regions.
Ibec CEO Danny McCoy said: “Effective regional development remains impossible without high-speed broadband. While Ireland’s private sector has invested €2.75bn over the past 5 years in network infrastructure we are dependent on the successful rollout of the NBP in order to bring high speed broadband to the 23% of homes and businesses in the State that are not commercially viable for the private sector to service directly.
“Without access to high speed broadband, our regions cannot be expected to attract, develop and retain a vibrant business ecosystem of start-ups, indigenous SMEs and multinational enterprises. As Ireland enters the mature phase of its business cycle with the economy close to capacity, investing in vital infrastructure such as high speed broadband is critical in helping to insulate the economy against future downturns.”
