Concerted national effort needed to address Brexit challenge - 2 May 2017

2 May 2017
Ibec, the group that represents Irish business, today said the Government's Brexit approach, as set out in a new report, captures a range of key business concerns; an assertive national effort is now needed to avoid the very real risk of a divisive, damaging Brexit divorce. Avoiding a major early clash over EU-UK exit terms is crucial so that substantial and constructive trade talks can begin.

Ibec CEO Danny McCoy said: "Despite the explicit recognition by both the EU and UK of the unique risks that Brexit poses to Ireland, for business massive uncertainty remains. A large and dangerous gap exists between current UK objectives and what is realistically possible within the parameters of the EU negotiating guidelines.

"It is vital that shared EU-UK economic interests inform the approach to negotiations, Political posturing needs to give way to pragmatism, and this needs to happen quickly. A far-reaching free trade deal with minimal trade barriers is the goal, but fair competition must also underpin any new relationship. The government must continue to work closely with business to identify detailed, ambitious and pragmatic ways to overcome the considerable challenges ahead."
