The Essential Guide to Change does not propose a “one size fits all” model, but is concerned with effective and sustainable change based on a people-centred approach. It provides a set of resources to stimulate thinking, to promote dialogue between all those who have a stake in the change process, and to help companies to formulate their own tailored approach.
Coping with restructuring in an increasingly volatile global environment is arguably the biggest challenge facing organisations now. As the pace of change intensifies comfort with change and competence in change processes are of growing competitive significance.
There is no single recipe for successful and sustainable change. Despite the claims of many authors, there is no magic bullet that can ensure success. Change is messy; indeed an increasing number of practitioners argue that change can’t be managed at all — it can only be unleashed.
The common feature among companies that have achieved real change and innovation is that they are all different: each follows their own path of learning, dialogue, experimenting, and risk taking before realising that their journey has brought them a long way.
The guide compares different models of change and provides evidence to support the case for a people-centred approach. It introduces a vision of successful change, drawing on case study evidence and on five pathways: engaging stakeholders, visioning the future, empowering others, monitoring and reviewing progress and embedding change. It applies the principles of a people-centred approach to a downsizing situation. Both sections five and nine describe resources and activities to support a change journey.
