Ibec, the group that represents Irish business, today said the Government’s new statutory National Mitigation Plan is an important milestone in supporting the country’s transition to a low carbon, climate resilient future. The group said it will work with Government and other stakeholders through the National Dialogue on Climate Action to help support and shape the implementation of the plan.
Conor Minogue, Ibec's Senior Executive for Energy Policy stated: "Meeting climate objectives in the context of a growing economy and a rising population, while also addressing concerns around energy security and competitiveness, will be a massive challenge. The National Mitigation Plan correctly acknowledges the scale and complexity of the decarbonisation issues that Ireland faces over the period to 2030 and beyond. It will be necessary for Irish society to find ways of reducing net greenhouse emissions by tens of millions of tonnes of CO2e compared to business as usual. The statutory plan provides a much needed, long-term, whole-of-Government approach to the challenges ahead. It is crucial that all proposals considered are subject to robust economic analysis."
