Description:Ibec is advocating in favour of the inclusion of carbon sequestration from improved land use towards the EU’s collective 30% non-ETS target for 2030 and the use of net afforestation LULUCF credits to assist in mitigating Ireland’s non-ETS emissions.
Implication(s):Ireland’s agri-food sector (livestock farming and agri-food processing) is the biggest economic sector in Ireland. The sector is worth €25 billion to the regional and rural economy since up to 85% of the supply chain is embedded in the local, rural and regional economy. The inclusion of net afforestation credits in the climate mitigation framework is important to Ireland given their low mitigation potential of agriculture.
Current Position:The European Commission will publish an Impact Assessment on the treatment of agriculture, land use, land use change and forestry in 2016.
