Description:Ireland needs an all-encompassing ‘vision for the future’ for modern languages. This requires a clear policy position on the place and role of languages in Irish society which is linked to national aspirations for international engagement in business, education and culture.
Implication(s):Irish companies will only gain a competitive edge and successfully enter new markets with the help of other languages. Better languages skills are needed wherever companies interact with service providers and suppliers, as well as in sales and marketing. Language skills also affect our ability to attract foreign direct investment. They are frequently required in contact centres, services centres and customer service/technical support functions within the ICT sector.
Current Position:The Department of Education and Skills is due to publish a foreign languages strategy in 2015
